Scholarships for University Students
As all parents and guardians admit, education is a long-term investment with an equally long gestation period, but it is one of the best legacies we can leave our children, our society and our planet. This has been Shell Nigeria’s belief since 1952. Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) invested $14.8 million in scholarships in 2014.
As part of the NNPC/Shell/Elf/Agip Joint Venture, SPDC runs the University Scholarship Scheme, a programme that makes a subtle but profound statement about the company’s commitment to capacity building.
Approximately 4,000 Nigerian undergraduates take aptitude tests every year in order to be part of Shell Nigeria’s ever-growing list of students at Nigerian universities. SSCE and JAMB results are used to shortlist applicants, followed by aptitude tests held in PortHarcourt, Warri, Enugu, Lagos, and Abuja.
A National Merit Award (NM) is available to Nigerian undergraduates and an Areas of Operation Merit Award (AOM) is available to students from Shell Nigeria’s operational areas. In both categories, awards are only available to first-year students.
A total of 16,000 applicants respond to Shell Nigeria’s advertisements inviting qualified candidates to apply for scholarships, which are only available in Nigerian universities.
Shell Scholarships for secondary schools
Shell Nigeria Secondary School Scholarship Scheme is available in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo and Rivers states.
In the seven states, 2,600 post-primary scholarships are awarded each year as part of the Secondary School Scholarship Scheme, intended to help students pay for school and enhance academic achievement.
A welcome relief for parents and guardians in the education of their children, the scheme has become so popular that thousands of parents and children look forward to it every year.
Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited (SPDC) manages SPDC JV’s Cradle-to-Career Scholarship Program.
Three hundred and fifty (350) talented students have already been accepted into quality secondary schools since the program began in 2010. Candidates are selected from Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta states in the Niger Delta.
Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) manages the National Cradle-to-Career Scholarship Scheme on behalf of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (NNPC).
The scholarship is awarded to the best three (3) candidates from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The scheme is in its second year, with 60 beneficiaries already enrolled in very good private secondary schools.
A number of local and international awards have been given to Shell Nigeria’s Cradle-to-Career scholarship. Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary General, recognized the scheme as a landmark initiative and acknowledged its impressive contributions to the development of education in Nigeria and the Niger Delta at the UN Innovations Fair in Geneva in 2011.
Scholars at Shell
A Shell scholarship programme began in the 1950s, awarding scholarships to qualified Nigerians in various fields of study both in and outside Nigeria, many of whom returned home to become key figures in government, commerce, and industry.
Nigerian Shell Scholars’ Forum – Promoting Academic Excellence
As Shell worked to produce and export the first barrel of crude oil for Nigeria, it also had the foresight to think about the generations of Nigerians who would one day drive the development of the newly independent nation. Scholarship awards were an effective way to train the required manpower.
It began in the 1950s with awards to qualified Nigerians in various fields of study within and outside the country. Many of them returned home to occupy key positions in the public service, business, and industry.
In 2013, Shell launched a Scholars’ Forum, which is intended to give older beneficiaries an opportunity to mentor the younger ones. A new Shell education portfolio strategy was also launched in 2013. The goal is to generate intellectual and creative energy to sustain Nigeria’s economic performance and global competitiveness. The strategy includes building scholars, promoting digital transformation, and fostering Nigerian growth and development.
At the 2013 Social Enterprise Report & Awards (SERAs), Shell was recognized and appreciated for its commitment to quality education in Nigeria since the 1950s.
Join the Shell Scholars’ Forum if you have ever been awarded a Shell scholarship.
The Shell Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) has established the Shell Scholars’ Forum for past recipients of Shell university and postgraduate scholarship awards.
What are the benefits of joining the Forum?
As part of the forum, scholars can network and build relationships, enabling them to not only contribute to SPDC’s education strategy in the future, but also provide communiqués that can positively influence education policies in government. Furthermore, the forum would serve as a platform for addressing the educational challenges of today while influencing the next generation of scholars.
